An evergreen shrub/subshrub that varies in height depending on light. Dark glossy green, ovate to oval leaves (2-4"long), leathery in texture alternate on green to red (when young) and grayish brown (when mature) twigs which change angles between each node, giving it a distinctive zig-zag appearance. Small, urn-shaped, pink to white flowers appear in early summer in elongated clusters followed by small, round, bluish-black edible berries. In full sun it forms dense, low thickets, 1 to 3-feet high. In shadier environments it is much more spindly, reaching 10-feet.
