An upright, deciduous, compact tree or shrub that grows to 6-feet tall and wide. Dark green leaves are slightly hairy, rounded, 3 to 5-lobed, toothed, and heart-shaped at the base. Deep red tubular flowers are held in pendant racemes, 2 to 4-inches long and are followed by rounded, glaucous, black fruit 1/4-inch across. A native to coastal California up to British Columbia.
