An open, suckering, perennial shrub with bright green leaves to 12-inches long, with holly-like leaflets, often turning red-purple in winter. Yellow flowers appear in spring in densely clustered racemes, to 3-inches long followed by blue-black berries. It is also the Oregon state flower.
