A low-growing, compact, evergreen shrub with smooth, reddish-brown bark and gray-green leaves. Clusters of small pale pink to white bell-shaped blossoms are followed by small, smooth, red fruit somewhat resembling tiny, flattened apples. The name "manzanita" means "little apple" in Spanish. Native to the coast ranges from California to British Columbia, it prefers evergreen forested coastal plains and is typically found in rocky areas and steep slopes. Highly drought tolerant.
