An evergreen shrub or small tree with dark green, glossy leaves and white, bell-shaped flowers in autumn followed by mature red and young yellow fruits which are spherical and warty. The mature fruit somewhat resembles a strawberry. Naturally adapted to dry summers, but able to grow well in cool wet summers as well, it has become a very popular garden specimen on the west coast. Best planted in a sheltered position due to its late flowering habit.
