A magnificent, broadleaf evergreen, sometimes shrubby tree with rich orange-red bark that peels away on the mature wood, leaving a greenish-silver appearance with a smooth, satin sheen. Heavy branches support thick, leathery leaves; they are glossy, dark green above and lighter, gray-green beneath. White bell-like flowers bloom in early summer and are followed by spherical, warty, red and yellow, strawberry-like fruit in the fall.
