This hardy native tree is distinguised by its pendulous branches with dark, shiny, deeply serrated leaves and sharp thorns (0.5 to 1-inch long) and dense clusters of intricate, rose-like flowers. In restoration sites, the deep roots stabilize the soil. In the garden, this tree attracts birds and butterflies. Grows slowly to 10-feet, sometimes reaching 20 to 30-feet. The black berries (or haws) are edible.
