Resembles a miniature sword fern but smaller with lance-shaped, rounded, dark green fronds. Deer ferns are distinctive because they have two different types of fronds. The fertile fronds are the taller of the two (up to 36 in), grow out of the center of each clump, and are deciduous. The sterile fronds are shorter (18 in) and thicker, surround the fertile ones, and remain evergreen.
